TPS <3’s Monopoly

Families have been torn apart by it. Life long friendships have been ended because of it. Heck, even wars have been started over it. But damn if it isn’t really fun too! So what’s this powder-keg o’ fun that’s caused so much heartache through the years? It’s Monopoly! Yes , that legendary board game created by Charles Darrow all those years ago. Recently at TPS we seem to have re-discovered this wonderful game and it’s been mostly good times all around. Mostly, hehe.

A little over a month ago we had an enterprising new recruit hop on board the ship, ContraMundi13. Ole Contra made like a good young pirate and introduced himself and then went about getting to know his fellow shipmates in the usual ways. He’d post here and there and even jump into IRC. Well, it was to be IRC that would put him on his way to making his mark here at TPS. A few of us were in the main channel chatting away like we always do, when the subject of Monopoly came up. Well it didn’t take long for young Contra to step up with the fine idea of a weekly TPS Monopoly tournament! Awesome we all thought, but will the enthusiasm actually last and will this thing take off? Sure enough people stayed stoked and the first tournament was an overwhelming success. A bit chaotic, but good fun nonetheless!

So for two straight weeks now, pirates from all the over the world have gathered every Friday/Saturday (depending on their timezone) to roll the dice, buy houses and do our best to bankrupt our fellow crew members. The past couple of tournaments have shown us that there’s a hearty little group of regulars that are on board to make sure that this thing keeps its momentum and stays popular for the foreseeable future.

Our monopoly tourneys are good times, but don’t be fooled. They can get pretty competitive as well. And this past week saw the first bad blood develop over a monopoly gone wrong! It was drama on the high seas and the e-fists were flying right and left. I’m not going to mention who was involved, but let’s just say that a couple of TPS regulars propbably won’t be on each other’s Christmas card lists anymore. It was like watching a soap opera unfold right there in IRC. It basically went down like this…

|Angry pirate|: you cheated!
phdman: no I didn’t
|Angry Pirate|: wahhhhhhh, you totally did!
|Angry Pirate|: the computer gave you properties, it likes you better and that’s not fair!
phdman: wtf?
|Angry pirate|: shut up! And stop cheating you cheating cheater!
phdman: dude, chill.
|Angry pirate|: CHILL?? HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO CHILL WHEN YOU PUT A HOTEL ON BALTIC AVE???
phdman: well I could have put a hotel on your mom.
|Angry pirate|: I WILL END YOU AND YOUR HOTEL BUILDING CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY!
AColdMod: ok children, calm down back there or I’ll turn this pirate ship right around!
|Angry pirate|: Fine then, but im totally taking my toys and going home.
phdman: here, have a grape-flavored apple.

So yeah, that may not be verbatim, but it’s a pretty close approximation of how it went down. We should have seent this coming though. Because along with those intense “monopoly highs” that so many seasoned veterans have come to depend on, there are also those horrible lows. The monopoly board is a cruel mistress and she’ll turn around and stab you in the back just when you think you’ve got her in the palm of your hand. I mean, it’s a little known fact that World War II was started after Hitler found out that Poland snuck a couple of extra hotels onto Marvin Gardens while he wasn’t looking.

Ah well, it seems some good has ultimately come out of this fracas though, because it’s highlighted the need for some ground rules. These are being worked on as we speak and they’ll probably be in place by next week’s tourney. Sure, we won’t think of every rule by then, but hopefully we’ll have enough in place to make sure things go a bit smoother.

I know it’s early days yet, but it looks like TPS is well on its way to becoming a finely-tuned monopoly machine! If you want more info feel free to either PM myself or ContraMundi13 and we’ll gladly hook you up. See you Friday

iDisappointed – My introduction to the Apple Tablet

I was a little anxious when I went to bed that night because tomorrow was going to be a dig day. I set an alarm for really early to make sure I wouldn’t miss a thing. When I woke up I was pretty groggy because it was a lot earlier than I’d normally get up. I didn’t care though. The moment was here! It was finally going to happen! The years and years of rumors and gossip, it was all about to come to an end. Or maybe it wasn’t?? Just like the day before Christmas, part of the fun of today was trying to guess whether or not you were going to get EXACTLY what you wanted! Well, after all of my anticipation, it seemed I was finally going to find out! Was there really going to be an Apple tablet??

Now, after that build up, you’re probably doing one of two things. Either you’re hating me for being one of those rabid Apple fanboys or your thinking to yourself, “I was doing the same thing!” Whatever camp you belong to, you couldn’t ignore the fact that it was a big day in the world of tech. The Apple tablet had been talked about for so long that it was almost mythical in status. A huge Apple branded unicorn that the world hoped to find one day, even though we all knew it pretty much didn’t exist. Was it going to be announced? Well, me and the rest of the world were about to know in a few minutes because Steve was about to take the stage and do his thing. I got my MacBook (the best machine to follow one of Steve’s presentations on) and climbed back into bed ready to press refresh repeatedly so that I could follow the live blogcast of the event. It wasn’t as good as being there or watching a live feed, but it was the next best thing! Hint to Apple: stream the video of your event live from now on please!

So Steve took the stage and in his normal style, started off slow by giving the crowd a recap on where things currently stood on planet Apple. The numbers all looked good, but I was hoping he’d be done with this part quickly and get to the freaking’ announcement! Luckily he did and guess what?? There was actually an Apple tablet! How cool was this thing? It was totally flat, had a gorgeous display and, like my wife, was fully touch sensitive! Heck, I even nudged her awake and started frantically pointing to the screen and saying “look, look, there it is!!” I immediately started thinking about how this puppy would look in my hands and all the cool stuff I’d be able to do with it. I was guarded though and as the presentation went on I kept hoping that they’d announce the one key piece of functionality that would truly make this my dream gadget. Cue Mel Gibson in Braveheart, “Freeeeeeeedom!” That’s what I wanted. That’s my killer app. Give me the freedom to install whatever I want and let me use my hardware the way I want to use it.

If you haven’t already guessed by now, I’m a completely dyed in the wool, certifiable Apple fanboy. I love the reality distortion field and I totally succumb to it every chance I get, but It does wear off eventually and there are things that bug me. You could make a pretty good comparison between Apple and democracy. They’re not perfect, but they’re easily the best option out there and I wouldn’t want it any other way. The main thing that really gets to me though is the amount of control that they exert over the iPhone and the app store. The rules are quite draconian and at times, they really limit the usefulness of their gadgets. I was hoping and praying that the tablet would be free from these restrictions. But as things wore on Steve made no mention of multitasking, and after the presentation was over, all the interwebs kept bitching about was how crippled this thing seemed to be. And, you know what? I agreed. I didn’t want to, but I did. This gadget that could have been my baby, the one that I had waited years for was…..a let down.

It could have been so great, but instead, it’s a giant iPod touch. That’s not groundbreaking or original or revolutionary. That’s just a bigger screen. I wanted this so much to be my bitchin’ mobile torrent device. It was going to run a full desktop operating system. I was going to be able to remote desktop into my seedbox from it, grab my files with a full version FTP client and take a full-screen, compromise-free version of TPS with me wherever I went. And that gorgeous display, it was going to make all of my HD x264 content absolutely shine! And all instantly, without having to convert it or load it into itunes first and deal with all of that drama. Finally I’d be able to listen to internet radio AND check my email at the same time, all while slapping around a n00b or two in #TPS. It was going to be perfect. Beautiful, powerful, incredible and a bunch of other really positive adjectives were supposed to describe it. But, they don’t. And, it wasn’t.

I still want one. I mean, it is pretty cool and as an Apple zealot I’m required to get one. Despite the restrictions, I’ll still probably be able to do some pretty cool stuff with it. What I’m really waiting for though, is for the jailbreak community to go nuts with this thing, because it could be so much more. Hopefully they can make the tablet worthy of it’s previously mythic status. Or maybe, JUST maybe, Apple relinquishes some of the control and allows people the ability develop for this device and distribute outside the walled garden that is the app store. One can hope right?

The True Power of Bittorrent

What is the real power of bittorrent? Is it the fact that we can get blazingly fast download speeds? How bout the fact that it’s completely decentralised and thus that much more difficult for the copyright gestapo to shutdown? Maybe, it’s the awesome communities that have developed throughout the private tracker world? I know! It has to be that fact that it’s free, the ability to get something for nothing right? Well actually it’s none of these. They’re all well and good in their own right, and each incredibly beneficial to all of us. But none of them is the real power behind bittorrent. BT’s real power is in your head. It’s in you, it’s in me and it’s in anyone who consumes content.

In order to really get this concept we have to examine why we watch movies, read books, listen to music and consume content in general. We do so because that content elicits an emotional response within us. Movies make us laugh, they make us think and some even make us cry. The music we listen to inspires us and the books we read give us the freedom to be almost anything we want. Regardless of the content choice, one thing is for sure. It’ll make us feel something. And, it provides a little bit of an escape, something that most people in this day and age desperately need.

As kids, we are totally in touch with our imaginations and we can do anything. A cardboard box becomes a fort or the ground below is molten rock and you’ll die if you touch it! That set of Mom’s old couch cushions can be made into a rocket that’ll fly you to the farthest reaches of outer space! We could do it all, and without even trying. But eventually we grow up and, as adults, we lose that ability. Now, the closest things we have to help us get back there are the movies we watch, the songs we listen to and the books we read.

Recently, I’ve had the privilege of joining a tracker that’s helped me get back in touch with my imagination and, in turn, my childhood. In case you don’t know, Cartoon Chaos is a niche tracker that is, as the name states, dedicated to tracking animated content. Recently I’ve snatched a number of series packs that allowed me to be a kid again. Some of these shows I haven’t seen in easily two decades, so it was quite an awesome experience to get my hands on them. While they’re playing, all the pitfalls of adulthood seem to melt away. It’s been a rough year, and being able to rekindle those feelings was exactly what I needed.

That experience is why we download. It’s the joy and memories that those torrents bring. When I double-click that episode of Thundercats, I’m back in pre-school and life is simple again. That’s the true power of bittorrent. So to Cartoon Chaos and mkdgraham I say thanks and keep up the good work. Let’s keep those memories coming.

To all My fellow Pirates, I say Thank You!

As we approach that time of year when the leaves begin to fall and nature starts to put a little nip in the air, most of us are reminded that the holiday season will soon be upon us. Now, I know that the holidays can evoke a myriad of different feelings in people. Some people love them and some people hate them. Some enjoy the relaxing days off while others relish the opportunity to make some fat overtime by working on the days that everyone else won’t. Some get up early to go to church while others get up early to watch football. It’s clear that everyone has their way of celebrating and/or dealing with the holidays. Sure, we’re all different, but you know what? I think there is one common feeling that can actually unite the church goer, the football watcher, the overtime worker and even the occasional Scrooge. That feeling is thanks. I think that each of those people, when push comes to shove, are all thankful for something when the holiday season rolls around. As this Holiday season approaches and it’s time to starting feeling thankful, I can think of one thing that I have now that I didn’t have last year. What’s that you ask? Why a membership in TPS of course!

As stated earlier, we all have things to be thankful for. I’m sure most, if not all, of us have a roof over our head, food to eat and people that love us. Those are the biggies, but we also shouldn’t forget to be appreciative of our hobbies and the little things in life that make our day-to-day grind a bit more fun. One of those things, for me, is hanging out with my fellow pirates! Here at TPS, we all sail under the same flag and we all share a common interest. That commonality and sense of community, is what makes our ragtag group of pirates so great.

I’ve been part of the crew for about two months now and in that short time I’ve grown tremendously and learned heaps. When I found TPS, I was a wet-behind-the-ears, scalawag looking for a good ship to sail on. I was stuck in port and longed to join the brethren of the coast! I was searching for a seedbox, because I thought that that would take me up a level and make me a torrenting badass. I wanted to roll with the “big boys.” So after a few hours on the net and some thorough research I came across the name “TPS” and heard that being a crew member there afforded one “certain benefits.” “Ohhhh, certain benefits,” I thought, “I could really use some of those!” Seems those benefits were well guarded and I would have to pass an interview if I was to join this crew. I was nervous, but willing to give it a go nonetheless. It was an intense hour of interrogation, but by the end of it zzenn was satisfied that I had answered all of my questions well and he granted me membership into the greatest torrent-related community on the net (a huge thanks to zzenn!).

I was stoked, but I also didn’t quite know what a true privilege I had just been given. Once I came on board I began to slowly explore the ship, figure out who’s who, who not to piss off and what role I would play on-board. As I got involved and learned my way around a bit, I found out that this wasn’t an invite forum at all. This was a group of friends who love to get together, hang out and just enjoy each other’s company. While other people catch up with their friends at Starbucks, we do something similar by convening here at TPS. Sure we all like torrenting and we all like the free flow of information etc, but we actually like the people and the camaraderie here way more than just the torrent talk.

Once I started posting a little and making some friends, those “certain benefits” I mentioned earlier, started to make themselves known to me. As I got involved my fellow pirates began to accept me and, in turn, invite me into some of their other trusted circles, i.e. the trackers I had only dreamed of while I was crewless. Through the kindness of TPS members I have been able to join a number of different trackers, that I use on a daily basis (no collecting here!), and I couldn’t be more thankful for this. All of my inviters, you know who you are and you have my sincerest thanks. Hopefully, you’ve checked up on me and seen that I have returned your trust by being wise, taking good care of my accounts and “seeding till I bleed!”

The trackers I have joined are amazing. The access to almost unlimited amounts of content is unprecedented and is absolute heaven for a digital junkie such as myself. For someone who has grown up in the television/internet/digital age having access to this content on demand is almost like eating or drinking. You need to it to feel connected to the world and you need it, most importantly, so you don’t get left behind. Technology moves so fast now that you can easily get passed by if you’re not careful. Without my membership in TPS I’d have none of this. I’d be consigned to cruising the varitable dark alleys in all of those virus-laden, spy-filled, mpaa-infiltrated public trackers. Blessedly, I don’t have to worry about that anymore. My crewmates have my back and, trust me, I’ve got their’s too.

What’s great about us is that We’re from everywhere. We’re all different kinds. Yet we’re all one crew and we always look out for each other. That’s what it means to be part of TPS and that’s why I’m a proud member. So what’s one thing I’m thankful for this year? That’s easy friend, I’m thankful for TPS.
